Are you new to the hub??

This document was originally written by the founders of The H.U.B. and typically goes out in emails to those who have joined.  Due to some transititions, we revisited this document and revised it just a bit to fit who or what we have grown into. Even if you aren't new to The H.U.B., please take a moment to review this article from time to time.
The H.U.B. The H.U.B. is the connecting point for believers in Yeshua pursuing others within the Torah community to gather with consistently. The heart of The H.U.B.’s purpose is that we want to see the entire body of Torah pursuers to grow from Yah’s Word and believe this is best achieved by being in close family-like fellowship with other believers. To attain that, believers need to be able to find one another. We hope to be that connection point. Yeshua taught that the greatest command is to love Yahweh, and the second is to love each other. We believe that love is not some untouchable feel-good noun in the clouds somewhere, but that love is what you do … how you live. We hope to connect believers in a way that is most conducive to applying what they’re learning about living out love – what it looks like to love Yahweh and to love each other. We expect anyone who wants to mix with us to be willing to take the journey on the narrow road, being willing to learn and change, and being willing to be challenged by each other and accountable to each other as we all learn to embrace Yahweh's Word, be Torah pursuant, and make His Kingdom a top priority. We’ll touch more on this under the point “The mishpachah.” But first let’s admit, not everyone is a good fit to be a part of our community… you've got to be serious about learning how to obey Yahweh's commands and be willing to move on to an active involvement in a mishpachah (home fellowship family). You're welcome to hang out with us at The H.U.B. for a while and see what we're all about, and, in the meantime, get some foundational studying accomplished. However, after a while, we'd like to see you permanently move into a mishpachah, or, we’d like to see you move on to find another community that you can truly commit to.

H.U.B. Gatherings. Our gatherings are a priority to us and we hope they are to you as well. We suggest you make it a priority to arrive no less than fifteen minutes early to allow time to mingle, get situated and to eliminate unnecessary distractions. Dress must be modest, but can be informal. (No shorts shorter than 1” above the knee, please, male or female.) There are no facilities available for children; however, they are most welcome and it is our desire children play an attentive and active role in our worship and studies. For younger not participating in the worship / study time, we suggest packing quiet activities such as coloring books, puzzles, etc. to occupy them.

A note about the Sabbath. We’d like to note here we observe Shabbat Friday evening sundown until Saturday evening sundown. Shabbat is a day to assemble with other believers and a day to rest. Resting means abstaining from work – and activities that cause others to work (like shopping or eating out).
“Work is to be done six days, and on the seventh day shall be a Sabbath of rest, a set-apart gathering; you shall do no work; it is a Sabbath to YAHWEH in all your dwellings.” (Leviticus 23:3)

Sabbath is a wonderful time of rest given to us by Yahweh. You will be tempted to come to The H.U.B. (and, in the future, your mishpachah) unprepared – spiritually, physically, emotionally and / or mentally. Throughout the week, keep this in mind: Come to give, not to take. With this in mind throughout the week, you’ll be more likely to show up ready to do just that! It’ll help guide your decisions and commitments throughout the week so that you come prepared to give. This time at The H.U.B. is preparing you for your mishpachah.

Please join other families in preparing for this blessed gift by:

 Spend time during the week in prayer for yourself and other families keeping Sabbath
 During the week, spend time studying Yah’s Word … the study of His Word as a centerpiece to your home is critical to Shabbat preparation
 Plan ahead what dish to bring and do any preliminary preparations
 A helpful note: some families use Friday as a preparation day; others begin preparations on Thursday; still others base their entire week’s schedule around Shabbat preparations … find what works for you so you may rest on Shabbat.

“And let us keep paying attention to one another, to spur each other on to love and of good works, not neglecting the assembling together of ourselves, as is the custom of some, but, rather, encouraging each other. And let us do this all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

The mishpachah. The Hebrew word mishpachah is translated as family in English…at The H.U.B., we use this term to relate to close family-like fellowship with other believers (your most intimate circle of our spiritual family – of Torah believers everywhere). Israelite communities have a responsibility to learn to obey Yahweh’s commands and to challenge one another to grow in their learning. It takes an intention, participation and commitment to do that. We’re all about long-term commitments to a mishpachah because this is where we believe true growth and learning happen best. So, in a nutshell, mishpachah is a family of Torah followers who study together, pray for one another, serve each other, come together for Sabbaths and feast days, hold one another other accountable … and, well, do family stuff. Connecting believers to a mishpachah or helping them establish one or grow one is the most fundamental goal of The H.U.B. Most of the mishpachah gather in houses.

Why? Well, here are some of the reasons:
1. The early disciples gathered in homes or in very small “synagogues” (not what we typically think of as a synagogue by today’s terms) that promoted close connections to be formed.
2. Getting together in homes enables the family of Torah believers to go grow infinitely and deeply – it penetrates deeply into the social infrastructure of families, cities … and, ultimately, the world!
3. Gathering in homes cuts overhead expenses and frees up more finances for helping people. It's financially smart. When a mishpachah gets too big to gather in a home, they start a new mishpachah.

We encourage each mishpachah to have at least one family that is actively preparing to be the next mishpachah that branches out. If you'd like to become part of a mishpachah, each has its own expectations that they will communicate to you. Please keep in mind that most of these groups are meeting in one another’s homes and they have a right to protect the sanctity and security of their homes and families by validating who is a good fit for new mishpachah candidates. Some examples of what these expectations might include are an interview with you (and your family, perhaps) to determine if you are a good fit for the mishpachah, one-on-one meetings before participating in the group, and / or your agreement to a pre-defined code of conduct.

A Note on the Feasts. We primarily leave plans for gathering for 'holy convocations' on Yahweh’s appointed times (listed in Leviticus 23 and Deuteronomy 16) up to each mishpachah. We recognize that not everyone keeps the same calendar so if we plan a gathering, we are not supporting one calendar over another. We do not try to “regulate” the calendar. This is something each family must work out for themselves. It should be noted that each is the fact that the festivals are Shabbats just like the weekly Shabbat and are a day for rest and to gather as a community, so each mishpachah will expect you take these days off work if you can.

“Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘These set feasts of YAHWEH, which you shall proclaim as setapart gatherings, shall be these: These are My appointed feasts…’” (Leviticus 23:2)

A note on food. Most of us structure our diets according to Yahweh’s instructions given to us in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14. We ask that you only bring food that meets those criteria. Basically, that means no shellfish, pork products or meat with a lot of blood in it. Of special note: One thing you'll really want to watch out for is gelatin. Unless it says on the ingredients label that it's vegetable or beef gelatin, it's usually made from pigs. Gelatin shows up in Jell-O (most brands) and marshmallows, and candies for instance. You'll also want to watch out for stuff with lard in it, like pie crusts. If you’re ever in doubt, feel free to email or call ahead of time to be sure. Thanks for your sensitivity in this matter.  Shalom.

Krav Maga Self-Defense Seminar

Krav Maga Self-Defense Seminar -blog post by Karen Wright

On Sunday, February 20, a group of folks that attend the HUB, attended a self-defense course at the Krav Maga Worldwide center here in Fishers, Indiana. For those of you unfamiliar with Krav Maga, it is the hand to hand defense training that the Israeli Defense Force use in Israel today. Krav Maga is an aggressive form of self defense that is easy to learn yet highly effective. Krav Maga emphasizes instinctive movement, practical techniques and realistic training scenarios. The goal is for people to get in shape and Go Home Safe!
Picture
I think I can speak for most that we all had a great time! After doing some warm up exercises, the first thing we learned was how to strike with our fists, side fist strikes and strikes with the base of your palm. If you're in cold weather it's better to strike with the palm. It's easier on the knuckles. It's important to have the proper stance when facing an attacker and the leverage it can create. Kicks to the groin are a very effective method against either male or female. In the event of an attacker approaching you and a loved one, we learned how to effectively step between shielding them. It is also very important to place yourself closest to or in the direction of the nearest escape route. Bear hugs, choke holds and how to flip over someone on top of you were other techniques taught that had very effective methods of protection. Lastly, we were shown how to disarm someone with a knife or gun. The instructor shared that he would much rather disarm someone with a gun than a knife. He explained that many times in the intense situation of an attack you can be struck with a knife so quickly and repeatedly and not even know you were stabbed. One more thing, in the event of an attack, many times the bystander/s don't know who is being attacked and/or defending themselves. It is a good idea to be yelling, "call 911" repeatedly. Speaking to or at the attacker also tends to throw them off. Many victims are silent because of fear. Trying to verbally calm the attacker or yelling call 911 can be very effective in the situation.
Picture
As we progressed through our 3 hour class, Jeff, the owner and our instructor, shared many stories and strategies and a personal testimony of defending a woman being physically abused by her husband in public. The outcome for this man...he spent four days recovering in the hospital. Obviously, Jeff is highly skilled in self-defense and didn't go into this situation without contemplating the responsibility to it. Our reactions to any situation have consequences as well. Sometimes there are bystanders that get hurt in the process of defending ourselves. To a degree in the heat of a situation as much as possible our actions cannot be purposely careless as we can be held accountable should it be found that our actions were reckless.

Krav is a very realistic, effective form of self-defense. And one 3 hour class does not in any way make you a pro. I think each of us took away something different and maybe feel a tad empowered to defend ourselves in some way. Krav, along with all other self-defense programs, works best to join and practice regularly to create a muscle memory or instinctive reaction to a real life attack.

The facility here in Indy is the only official Krav Maga Worldwide training center in all of Indiana. Not only do they teach the Krav Maga self-defense classes, they offer fitness classes, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Weapon and Fight classes. If you live in the area, I highly recommend considering signing up for classes to strengthen your skills and confidence in self protective as well as getting more physically fit. If there is no Krav Maga center near you, check into other types of self-defense training and learn ways to GO HOME SAFE!

Zimmers for Uganda

Zimmers for Uganda
David and Charity Zimmer are believers who have a call on their lives to minister to the people of Uganda. They have overcome great obstacles to this call since becoming Torah Pursuant. As Torah Pursuant followers of Yeshua, David and Charity desire to disciple Ugandans. It is their mission to disciple using the entirety of Scripture, with an emphasis on teaching all of Yahweh’s instructions, the Biblical Feasts, Sabbath, the prophetic picture of our Messiah that is revealed as we walk in His ways, as well as to sharing the redemptive work that Yeshua accomplished for each of us. They will do this through whichever doors Yahweh opens for them: in home Bible studies, feeding centers, medical clinics, leadership workshops, and working with children.
Picture

David and Charity are raising their support, but they can only leave for Uganda when they are actively receiving 80% of their budget from supporters like you. They are relying on believers to partner with them in reaching the Nations with the FULL Gospel – the one that begins in Genesis and is carried all throughout the Scriptures. While the Zimmers believe that it is important to bring people to Messiah, they think it is Yahweh’s desire for them to disciple the Ugandan people and teach the people of Uganda how to show Messiah to one another. Through this Biblical method of making disciples, Ugandan believers can be a light to non-believing Ugandans. Please consider helping the Zimmers spread the Torah throughout Uganda and to disciple Ugandans to win Ugandans for Yeshua, our Messiah.

Yahweh opened a door for them to partner with an agency that is aware of their beliefs. Additionally, all of their funds were able to be transferred to the new agency! Praise Yah! David and Charity are now partnered with Commission to Every Nation.

Hub Family,

Please see the request below from our Brother, Jake Lansford:

Dear HUB Fellowship,

Nearly four weeks ago, the fabric of my family was forever changed. My oldest brother, Joel, crashed and died in a plane crash, and left his wife and twin toddlers behind. The shock drove my family together in deep prayer and intimacy with the Father, as we struggled through the pain of never seeing our dear brother again in this lifetime. I still cannot understand why Yahweh would allow my young sister-in-law, Julia Ann, to be widowed with her two little boys, but I trust in His enduring goodness. They were so happy together!

Although Joel worked hard to provide for his family, he did not have life insurance. My sister-in-law now faces the task of entering the work field to provide for her family. She has experience in waitressing, but any job is hard to do with children to care for.

You can help: A fund has been created for Yahweh’s people to come together according to His instruction to care for the widow and the orphan. Anyone can donate to my sister-in-law, Julia Ann, and help her during these crucial first few years of recuperation and healing. My family and I are committed to her welfare, but we are aware that the entire Body of Yeshua hurts when the leg or the arm is hit unexpectedly.

Will you please consider this request? I know that I have only recently joined your fellowship, but I feel that I am among true believers when we are gathered.

Continuing in His faithfulness,

Jacob Lansford

If you were one of the poor, unfortunate souls that did not get to Sukkot in Indiana with the HUB this year, then you may want to stop reading now… Sometimes it’s best not to know what you’ve missed. Of course, I’m kidding. I would like to share some of my favorite Sukkot memories and I’d LOVE to hear some of yours!

We had 13 entries into our 3rd Annual Chili Cook-off! I was caught in a 3-way tie for second place… we had our friend, Dougy, break the tie by tasting the 3 chilis… but there wasn’t any of my “Silly Chili” left :( But good memories nonetheless

Emily and I lead worship for the very first time ever. That was a new experience and, thanks to the counsel of a couple good friends, I think it went pretty well

Watching a new romance blossom between two of my friends

The last night was very memorable. I remember being prayed over by friends and family who love me. They sympathized with my struggles and encouraged me in following God’s Will. It’s amazing to think that I have so many people who love and care about me- and I love and care about them

Mikvah-ing in the freezing, cold lake. I loved watching everyone’s hilarious faces as the came up out of the water :D… of course it was touching to hear testimonies of God’s amazing grace in people’s lives. We did the baptisms after a study on that very topic

Late night talks with good friends

Getting to know the kids. It was fun to play with the kids and hear their stories. We had a blast making up stories and telling each other “Tall Tales”. A tall tale is a true story with exaggerated details to make it more interesting :)

As is the tradition, we had a night devoted to the Variety Show. One of my favorite parts of Sukkot is watching everyone perform- some acts are serious and some funny… mostly funny but always enjoyable

The birth of the blood moon, haha. If you want to know why this is funny then you should have been at Sukkot with us

Please share some of your favorite memories with me. I’d love to hear some of your stories. What did you learn this year? How were you blessed? What are you doing next year? The correct answer to that last question is that you will come spend Sukkot with the Hub in Indiana ;) Don’t forget, we will have a cabin for single men and a cabin for singles women.. so, singles, we have room for you!

Blessings,

Bethany, on behalf of the HUB Sukkot Group

P.s. Enjoy this little video that Emily put together!

Besides reading over the scriptural overview of the Menorah, we discussed what the possible significance of various details of the menorah, such as; The number of candlesticks, the almond tree detailing, it's position in the tabernacle and the fact that it is made of a sold, hammered work.

Of course like other elements of the Tabernacle, the menorah is a shadow of good things to come- Jesus/Yeshua!
(Hebrews 10:1, Colossians 2:17)

Just as the priests needed the menorah and the light it gave to preform their duties unto YHWH, so it is with Yeshua. No one can come to the Father except through Him. Without the light from the menorah the priests would be in utter darkness and unable to find their way to the Father.
(See John 1:6-9, John 8:12, John 14:6-7)

Sukkot 2014- The HUB

The HUB Sukkot 2014 - What we did, what we wish we would have done, things that were fun, things that weren’t and hopefully you’ll see why we want to do it again next year and we want you to join us!
Picture
This year we were able to use the beautiful facilities at Camp Lakeview in Seymour, Indiana. We used the cabins and covered picnic area as our Sukkot/Sukkahs and in one afternoon we had transformed the covered picnic area into a beautifully welcoming ‘Sukkah’ that we could enjoy many of our meals under. There were plastic grapes, lemons, and pomegranates hanging from the beams and ceiling, the tables were covered in fall themed table cloths, baskets of peanuts and pretty pumpkin figurines reminded us to enjoy our time together.  In addition to this Sukkah, the families had built a Sukkah out of materials they had found in the woods.

Picture
Some of the activities we did were carried on from last year! For example; Last year we had a Chili Cook-off and everyone contributed (even if they didn’t bring chilli- some brought cornbread, cheese, sour cream, all the fixings). The top 3 chilli’s were awarded a special, hand decorated spoon. Last year we had 3 select judges but this year everyone had a vote. The winner this year was a delicious white chili called ‘Great White’.

‘Talent Night’ is another tradition carried on from last year. Last year it wasn’t even planned! We had actually planned to go canoeing but, when the rain prevented us from having fun in the river, the moms came up with something new. They knew that they would need an indoor activity that was fun for all ages and that everyone could participate in. Thus, the variety show was born- but all of us kids call it ‘talent night’. Talent night is a hilarious event where you can share a dance, song, skit, joke or talent in front of all your friends. Some of the acts are funny, some are serious- most are funny!

Picture
Then there’s the clothespin tradition. This is a favorite with the kids (and the adults- but they wont admit it). Basically- you try and clip people with clothes pins when they’re not looking while trying to avoid being clipped yourself. Be careful or you could end up sitting on the clips that are hanging of the bottom of your shirt! This goes on all week long and you never know when someone might be trying to clip you- It’s been said that you can even be clipped in your sleep (This only happens to the most vigilant clippers because it’s impossible to undetectably clip them any other way).

Of course, don’t forget the Lulav dance. We learned the ‘lulav dance’ from a different Sukkot that we visited. It’s a simple dance that everyone can do. It ties together the two commandments; to rejoice before the Lord and to gather the four different species.

Picture
One thing we would change from this year was the amount of worship services- there weren’t enough! We only had 2 the whole time, while last year we did one everyday. Doing a service everyday is a little stressful, so, next year we will probably go somewhere in between. Usually a worship service consists of praise and worship music, a few blessings and a midrash/bible study of some sort.

What else went on during Sukkot 2014? I guess you'll have to come and join us next year!

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:15-20

"And the Word became flesh, and did tabernacle among us, and we beheld his glory, glory as of an only begotten of a father, full of grace and truth." John 1:14
Hope to see you next Sukkot!

Shalom Aleichem!

Most Christians do not follow the law of Moses...WHY???

11/9/2014

Picture
Recently I was on Facebook and came across a post from my friend RJ Jackson. I thought it was very well written and I wanted to share it with those who follow The H.U.B.'s Blog.

Most Christians do not follow the law of Moses...WHY???

1. Jesus abolished the law--FALSE

-(Matthew 5:17-19)-"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have not come to abolish these things but to fulfill them.
I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth pass away not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter will pass from the law until everything takes place.
So anyone who breaks one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever obeys them and teaches others to do so will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.--TRUTH

2. Jesus taught against the law- FALSE

(Matthew 23:2-3)-"The experts in the law and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat.
Therefore pay attention to what they tell you and do it. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they teach."--TRUTH

3. The law was too difficult--FALSE

-(Deuteronomy 30:11-14)"This commandment I am giving you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it too remote.
It is not in heaven, as though one must say, "Who will go up to heaven to get it for us and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?"
And it is not across the sea, as though one must say, "Who will cross over to the other side of the sea and get it for us and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?"--TRUTH
(FYI, The oral law, Talmud, was difficult, not the Torah)

4. Paul did not follow the law-- FALSE

--Acts 24:14- "But I confess this to you, that I worship the God of our ancestors according to the Way (which they call a sect), believing everything that is according to the law and that is written in the prophets."-- TRUTH

--Acts 25:8- "Paul said in his defense, "I have committed no offense against the Jewish law or against the temple or against Caesar."--TRUTH

Be careful not to take Paul's writings out of context. His writings can easily be twisted to show that the law has been abolished.
It's a common mistake.
Peter warned us about this mistake :

-- 2 Peter 3:15-16- And regard the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as also our dear brother Paul wrote to you, according to the wisdom given to him,
speaking of these things in all his letters. Some things in these letters are hard to understand, things the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they also do to the rest of the scriptures.--TRUTH

When reading Paul's letters, remember that he uses the generic term "law" to refer to at least seven different laws:

-Law of God (Romans 3:31; 7:22-25; 8:7)
Isaiah 40:8, Mark 7:9-13, 1peter 1:23-25
-Law of sin (Romans 7:23-25)
-Law of sin and death (Romans 8:2)
-Law of faith (Romans 3:27)
-Law of righteousness (Romans 9:31)
-Law of God (Romans 3:31;7:22-25;8:7)
-Law of Christ (Romans 8:2, 1 Corinthians 9:21)

This post is to encourage all to research the scriptures. Jesus warned us of false doctrines.
The decision to follow Gods law has nothing to do with salvation. The law can't save us. We follow the law because we LOVE God.

Shalom Aleichem!

Our August 3, 2013 H.U.B. gathering focused on the topic of who Yahweh's people are according to scripture.  The following questions were asked:

  • Are there any "signs" that might identify those who belong to YHWH according to Scripture?
  • Does the Scripture tell us how to identify between those who are, and those who are not His?
  • What does it mean to be His people, and what does it mean for Him to be one's Elohim?

Understandably, the notes taken in the images below are somewhat cryptic without the context of the conversation that coincided with the notes but perhaps it will provide you a starting point for searching out the answers to these questions on your own.

Shalom Aleichem!
The H.U.B.
